STEP BACK IN TIME
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Ever wonder what Walt Disney World was like way back when? Each
month we visit a time gone by in Walt Disney World history. Last
month, we went back more than 30 years to January 15, 1975, and
the grand opening of Space Mountain in the Magic Kingdom. This
month we are going right back to 1975. AllEars(R) reader John
Hayes was kind enough to send scans of VacationLand Magazine's
Spring 1975 issue, which talked about Space Mountain:

"Walt Disney envisioned such an attraction over 10 years ago. He
wanted everyone to be able to experience the excitement of space
travel presently known only by a few select astronauts.

"Over three years have gone into the actual building of Space
Mountain. Each of the 72 massive, pre-stressed concrete beams
that form the huge, ribbed slopes of the sealed cone had to be
cast near the construction site. Mammoth cranes then lifted the
pie-shaped, 114-foot tall beams into place. Each beam has a
14-foot wide base and is five-feet wide at the top.

"The tracks were designed with the elaborate use of computers so
that all their curves and bends produce an entirely smooth
'flight.' At times, the rockets' speeds reach over 25 mph on the
mile-long paths.

"WED Enterprises 'illusioneers' developed numerous special
effects for this thrilling attraction. When the 'astronauts' are
launched from the space station, their capsule shoots through a
tunnel like enclosure where the sensation of great speed is
created. During reentry, they pass through a 'rotating' tunnel
where, it seems, their spacecraft is 'rolling.' Sound, light,
darkness and motion are all skillfully combined in 'Space
Mountain' to convey the exhilarating physical sensations of
interplanetary travel."

HIDDEN MICKEYS ALERT
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Steve Barrett, author of the Hidden Mickeys book and webmaster
of www.HiddenMickeysGuide.com,

[7]highlights some compelling
Hidden Mickeys from Disney movies:

1. A proportional bubble Mickey appears in The Little Mermaid.
When Sebastian arrives into the theater, look behind and to the
left of the blue shell to find three bubbles forming a classic
Hidden Mickey. (Thanks to Daniel & Yae:lle Berset)

http://allears.net/btp/hm200.jpg

2. Also in The Little Mermaid, at the beginning during the scene
of the music concert in King Triton's Palace, there is a shot
that pans over the audience. Among the audience is Mickey,
Donald Duck and Goofy! Mickey and friends are sitting under the
dolphin on the right. The inset photo shows them up close.
(Thanks to Disney Barbie of Southampton, England, Emma, and
Mandy Newby)

http://allears.net/btp/hm199.jpg

3. In Lilo & Stitch, watch carefully in the scene when Lilo is
teaching Stitch to dance at the outdoor market. Above them,
formed by some Hawaiian melons, is a neat classic Mickey! A red
circle around the melons has been added to the photo. (Thanks to
Alex Valdes and Sharon Dale)

So, be sure to look for Hidden Mickeys in Disney movies!

SCRAPBOOKING MAGIC!
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

AllEars(R)is excited to annnounce a new series of articles all
about Disney Scrapbooking! Scrapbooking is about telling a
story, both for us to remember, and for future generations to
enjoy. Written by Disney Scrapbook Expert Barbara Bennett and
her husband Brian (who are also the owners of MouseMemories.com
), a new article on scrapbooking will be published each month.

Barbara and Brian write: If you've been curious about this "new
wave" of scrapbooking, you'll enjoy this series of articles.
We're going to start with the history of scrapbooking, and then
take you through the kinds of tools and supplies that are
available. We'll teach you how to get started if you're thinking
about taking the plunge into this great hobby. We'll show you
that scrapbooks can (and should) really be fun to produce. Since
we specialize in Disney scrapbooking ourselves, we'll do all of
that with a Disney twist that just might convince you to try
scrapbooking your photos. Already a scrapbooker? As we go
forward we'll work our way through lots of tips and techniques
that you'll enjoy as well. If you're like most of us, you've got
boxfuls of photographs from all of your Disney trips -- not to
mention holidays, birthday parties, family get-togethers, and so
on that you can turn into wonderful memory albums that you'll be
able to enjoy for the rest of your life before passing them on
to your family or friends.

AUDIO GUIDE REVIEW
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

by Michelle Scribner-MacLean

Remember the second time you visited Disney World? You were
probably a bit more confident, took your time... and maybe by
your third or fourth trip you felt like a pro... and started
noticing all of the details that make Walt Disney World so
special?

For many of us, the details are one of the many reasons we keep
coming back to the Magic Kingdom. Lou Mongello, author of the
Walt Disney World Trivia books, has put his love of the history
and details of WDW to create The Audio Guide to Walt Disney
World. The recording, which took Mongello about 18 months to
write, record and edit, can be likened to an audio guide that
you rent when you go to a blockbuster museum exhibit, the type
that give you more inside information about what you're looking
at, listening to, and experiencing. This ongoing series, which
will eventually feature each of the lands of the Magic Kingdom,
has high appeal for those wanting to get the "back story" about
the architecture, music and production aspects of Main Street,
USA.

Mongello had several goals in mind when producing this audio
guide. "I really want to be able to both enhance the vacation
experience for the guest who is visiting the parks, as well as
give people a little bit of the 'magic' at home as they prepare
for their next visit, or just when they need a little bit of
Disney in between their visits." In addition, this recording is
an excellent resource for those visitors who are visually
impaired, as Mongello's descriptions are rich and detailed.

DREAM LOVERS...
WHERE ARE YOU?

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Year of a Million Dreams, which began Sunday, October 1,
2006, has been extended through 2008, and as part of that
celebration Disney cast members are not just dispensing "dream"
prizes, but are also creating an unprecedented number of
"Magical Moments." These include guests being tapped to help
with the pixie-dusted opening of Magic Kingdom, getting the star
treatment at a celebrity-style handprint ceremony at Disney's
Hollywood Studios, or being named Official Wildlife Spotters at
Disney's Animal Kingdom. We have some reports of guests at Walt
Disney World and Disneyland receiving "dreams" from the Dream
Squad and some of these Magical Moments:

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Tammy Sinquefield: Our last day at Disney was at Blizzard Beach.
We got there early and were near the front of the line. About 30
minutes before opening a lifeguard came out and talked to a
couple of families before coming over to us. He talked to us for
a minute and then asked my 8-year-old son if he was going to go
down Summit Plummet. My son said yes. Then he asked us to come
with him and took us through the turnstiles. He announced to the
waiting crowd that my son was the Ski Captain for the day and
that the park couldn't open until he (my son) went down Summit
Plummet! My son received a medallion to wear that said "Ski
Captain," a free refillable mug, free rental towels, free locker
rental and a special hut down by the wave pool that said "Ski
Captain" on it. The Disney photographers took lots of pictures
of us and then took my husband, daughter and son up to Summit
Plummet. I watched at the bottom while my son was the first down
Summit Plummet, then my daughter and husband. The photographers
continued to take pictures for us. It was a Very Special Day
that we'll always remember!

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Kathy Hamill: Our Magical Moment came when we arrived at Pop
Century on the evening of December 3 for a 3-night stay. I got
in line at registration and was quickly waited on. The cast
member had already processed my credit card and printed my
parking pass, when she asked me to wait just a moment. She went
to get her manager and when they came back, they informed me
that I was the lucky recipient of a special "Year of a Million
Dreams" resort upgrade. The manager explained to me that, with
this upgrade, I would be allowed to "transfer" my resort stay to
a moderate resort for the same value resort price I was paying
at Pop Century. The only catch was that Disney got to pick the
upgraded resort, which for us wound up being Coronado Springs. I
immediately accepted the upgrade and in no time, we were out the
door and heading for Coronado Springs for a great stay.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Susan Kuster: On Wednesday, January 9, 2008, my husband, our
friend's 13-year-old daughter and I were in the staging area for
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, when in walked two members of the Dream
Squad! I immediately whispered to my husband, "We're gonna win
something!" And indeed we did! Dream Fastpasses for the day! But
the surprises didn't end there... about 30 minutes later, while
at the Hollywood Tower Hotel, we (and about 25 others) were
greeted by four more of the Dream Squad and won VIP seating for
the parade! WOW! Two prizes within 30 minutes of each other! We
learned later, while waiting for the parade to start, that the
VIP seating is only given out about once a week, so we felt
extra special. The viewing area is on the steps to the ABC
Studios that are being renovated, and we were given as much Coke
product as we wanted.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Beverly White: Thursday, January 10, was our "Magical" day. My
husband, daughter, son and future daughter-in-law (a
first-timer!) were coming off the Living with the Land boat ride
when the Dream Squad approached my daughter, Shannon. Seems she
was in the right seat at the right time on the right ride and
was awarded a $500 shopping spree at Mouse Gear. We couldn't
believe it! I'd read about others getting dreams but never
thought it would happen to us. And what better dream for a
23-year-old girl! We were escorted to Mouse Gear, given big
high-fives from all the cast members and given our own personal
shoppers to help us with our selections. We had a ball! Shannon
didn't know what to get (it can be very overwhelming), but she
finally found her way to the jewelry where she saw the pearls
set. She hesitated but we all finally convinced her to go for
it. It was something she probably would never have gotten for
herself, but thanks to the Mouse and his helpers, her dream came
true. We were also given two group Fastpasses since shopping
took up a bit of our touring time. We felt special all day with
our Million Dreams Winner buttons. Wherever we went, cast
members congratulated us and asked what we had won. Truly a day
to remember.

TIPS OF THE MONTH!

EDITOR'S NOTE: Our Tips featurette is now monthly! Thanks to
everyone who has written us asking us to return to including
tips every week. Unfortunately, we do not receive enough "new"
tips each week to keep the feature weekly. We have enhanced our
Tips Database, though -- there's a new category that allows you
to pull up the 15 most recently added tips.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Linda McCullough: I just returned from WDW and while there I
purchased a couple of "sippy" cups for my grandchildren. The
cast member told me to make sure that I packed these items in my
suitcase and not in my carry-on because like the snow-globes
they will not make it through security since they have liquid in
them.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Kaercher Family: We traveled in December and noticed how the
food available at the counter service restaurants has gotten
healthier - giving more choices to those with Celiac Disease.
Sit-down restaurants were wonderfully accommodating, of course!
I did find out that one counter service location in each park
has gluten-free pizza available. It is not on the menu, you have
to ask for it. In Magic Kingdom it was Pinocchio's and at Epcot
it is in the American Pavilion. Just ask Guest Services as the
location may change. I also found gluten-free brownies and
cookies in Wilderness Lodge and some of the counter service
restaurants. I still brought an easy breakfast to eat in our
hotel room to save time, but once I went out I didn't have to
worry! What a pleasant vacation it was for this Celiac mom!

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Bethany Lazzara: My husband and 4-month-old daughter (yes, we
really took a 4-month-old to Walt Disney World -- we were THOSE
people) just returned from the World. I had read on your amazing
website about the Baby Care Centers, and I couldn't recommend
their use enough. These areas are the most wonderful places.
This is our first child so we didn't even know they existed.
There are rooms for changing, feeding, breastfeeding and Mommy
and Daddy bathrooms, all in an air-conditioned area. There are
essentials for sale and a lovely Disney cast member working and
helping in any way they can. These centers are a must for anyone
with a child. I cannot express how thrilled we were with the
facilities. I would encourage anyone to use them to the fullest!

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Kristen M.: If you are using a different dining plan other than
the basic one, let your servers know! On more than one occasion
they would ring us up and come back saying we had no more
credits left. We had to reiterate to them which plan we were
using -- they don't always check on your room key. I know it
gets busy and I hated having to send them back to do it again.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Valerie Fisher: We visited Walt Disney World this past July with
five children ranging from 2 to 14 years old. We found the best
place to line up for character photos was at Epcot's Character
Connection. It is air-conditioned and the staff were very
friendly and interacted with the children and adults. The
characters went out of their way to please and play with my
2-year-old. An experience as an adult I will never forget: Pluto
kneeling on the floor, nose-to-nose with my 2-year-old, and
Minnie and his first kiss.

the conservation of the endangered whooping crane, leads these
birds on a migration from Wisconsin to Florida using ultralight
planes. Disney has supported this project through the Disney
Wildlife Conservation Fund since 2000. To follow the progress of
OM, or for the opportunity to watch these birds on their arrival

Many of you wrote in response to Mike Scopa's feature article
last week about the American Adventure. Here are just a few of
the emails:

... from Joe Brown: Thank you so much for Mike Scopa's article
on The American Adventure. What a great summary of the
interesting background on the design and building of the
pavilion. And more importantly, Mike has captured the feeling
and essence of the "experience" of The American Adventure. Being
an avid fan of our country's history and someone who has served
my country in Iraq, The American Adventure is a very special
part of every trip to Disney for me. I have probably visited The
American Adventure a dozen times over the years, and I have yet
to make it though the entire presentation dry-eyed. Many thanks
to AllEars(R) and to Mike Scopa for sharing this insightful and
inspirational article with us.

... from Kelly Coyne: Loved Mike Scopa's article! American
Adventure is my favorite, too. Please thank him for all those
interesting facts about the show that I never knew.

... from Patti Hircak: WOW! After reading Mike Scopa's article
on the American Adventure in Epcot, I want to go back to Disney!
What a wonderful article and a job well done by Mike! By the
way, I tear up during "Golden Dreams," too!

... from Karen: Thank you so much for Mike Scopa's wonderful
article about the American Adventure Pavilion and its
entertainment offerings. I, too, have always loved it and
sometimes am met with skepticism when I tell others about it.
("Isn't it just like a newer version of Hall of Presidents?
What's the big deal?") I have all the CDs available from the
Voices of Liberty and plan my touring schedule during WDW trips
around the VoL's performances. Additionally, although "Golden
Dream" is fabulous, the vignette/song that always moves me to
tears is the Civil War tribute, "Two Brothers." Do you know who
performed that song, and/or who wrote it and whether it's
available for purchase or download?

AllEars.Net Columnist Anita Answer provides this answer:

The name of the song is "Two Brothers,"(C)1951. It is also known
as "One Wore Blue and One Wore Grey." It was written by Irving
Gordon, better known for the famous comedy routine "Who's On
First?" that he wrote for Abbott and Costello. The version heard
in The American Adventure at Epcot and Great Moments with Mr.
Lincoln at Disneyland is sung by Colombian singer, Alicia Almo,
and is not available for purchase. The song has also been
recorded over the years by Kay Starr, Harry Belafonte, Tom
Jones, Rod McKuen, the Weavers, and many other artists.
Hopefully, you'll be able to find a recording by at least one of
them.

... from Nancy Maloney: Just a quick note about Disney's Lost &
Found. My daughter visited the park with her high school
marching band December 27-30. They marched in the SpectroMagic
Parade and received a special musical experience at Epcot. In
addition, the group was able to enjoy all the parks with their
friends. They had a wonderful time. The only problem was that
several band members, including my daughter, lost their cell
phones while in the parks. Replacing a cell phone in the middle
of a contract can be quite expensive, not to mention the expense
of any call that could have been made while it was lost. Hannah
was very upset, but was directed to fill out a lost and found
report in Guest Relations. She called me to break the news; I
suspended the service and hoped for the best. What a relief to
get a call the next day from the Lost & Found staff that her
phone was found! They told me to expect it in the mail within a
couple of days. Sure enough, we got the phone back, postage
paid, in our mailbox! The trip, which culminated in her band's
performance at the Outback Bowl, was a great hit. Disney treated
the kids so well; the Lost & Found department got a real
work-out, and everyone had a terrific time!

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

... from AllEars(R) Researcher Kenny: Samantha Brown was taping
for an upcoming television show at the Magic Kingdom on Monday.
In between takes she was gracious enough to pose with fans for
photographs. Her producers handpicked a couple of families to
interview and, in between the taping of the two families, a
spontaneous interaction with two small children occurred. They
actually kept the cameras running and taped the interaction.
(And the production assistants got the proper authorization
paperwork so they could use the footage.) Samantha did a great
job with the children. She also taped a segment involving
SpectroMagic, though this time, with more people along Main
Street, she was kept closer to the production crew and had less
fan interaction.

Last week we had another "Before and After" challenge, this one
suggested by reader Valerie W. of Maryland. We gaive the
descriptions of two Disney-related terms (restaurant, shop,
attraction, parade, event, etc.) that have a common word in the
middle. The solution is a new, combined Disney-related term.

For example:

One of Epcot's newest thrill rides +

one of WDW's favorite roller coasters in the dark =

Mission: SPACE Mountain (Mission:SPACE + Space Mountain)

Here's this week's Before and After Challenge:

An attraction that leaves you saying, "How'd they DO that?"

+

A unique kind of "coaster" where you just might go "SPLAT!"

=

???

SOLUTION:

Turtle Talk with Crush

+

Crush 'N' Gusher (the water coaster at Typhoon Lagoon)

=

Turtle Talk with CRUSH 'N' Gusher!

Congratulations to Ruth Ann M. of Illinois, whose email was
chosen from among about 125 submitted with the correct answer
this week. Ruth Ann will receive a beautiful Disney snowglobe

FEATURE ARTICLE

The American Adventure: Experience It!

by

Mike Scopa
AllEars(R) Columnist

I'm often asked what is my favorite Walt Disney World
attraction. I never hesitate to proudly proclaim The American
Adventure as, hands down, my favorite place to visit at Walt
Disney World.

Although sometimes when I say American Adventure and not some
thrill ride like Space Mountain, Mission: SPACE, Soarin', The
Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster or even
Expedition Everest, you would think I had committed a felony.

For a long time I have had a deep affection for the American
Adventure attraction. This attraction does so much for me and
has so much to offer. Almost every time I visit the pavilion in
Epcot's World Showcase I wonder how many guests take for granted
what this attraction has to offer them.

Let me share a little background information regarding this
attraction.

First let's talk about the placement of the pavilion.

When Epcot was first designed, or I should say, when World
Showcase received its original design, the United States
pavilion was not exactly positioned where it is today. The
original design had this pavilion placed between Future World
and World Showcase. This would allow the pavilion to serve as a
gateway to World Showcase.

Actually one reason for putting it there was so that Canada
would be to America's north and Mexico to the south. Thus the
decision, at least temporarily, was to build the pavilion
between Future World and World Showcase and to build it up on
stilted structures so guests would actually walk under the
pavilion and then come out to see the World Showcase in all its
splendor.

That sounded like a good idea at the time.

The discussion on placement never stopped. Not everyone agreed
that putting it at the front of World Showcase was the best
idea. The notion of putting the pavilion away from the other
pavilions seemed to some an arrogant move. Others thought that
separating it from the other countries would make it seem aloof.

Should the United States pavilion not even be part of the World
Showcase? That would not work.

The debate went on until it was finally decided that the United
States pavilion as the host pavilion should have a position
among the others as the centerpiece of World Showcase. The
argument continued that since it would be the host pavilion, it
should be the first pavilion the guests see as they approach
World Showcase. Thus the United States pavilion now sits center
stage in World Showcase welcoming guests and visitors to that
part of Epcot.

The design of the pavilion is another story.

The original design was something far different than the
structure we see today. The original design, which was based on
the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., bothered the World
Showcase designers and the Imagineers because it was very
contemporary (some would say futuristic) and not in the
traditional design of the other countries.

It just didn't seem right.

After more discussion and much debate, it was agreed that the
pavilion should be built in Georgian architecture style. The
pavilion today stands as a proud Georgian mansion, emulating
architectural design from the late 1700s. It encompasses 108,000
square feet and was built with handmade Georgia red clay bricks,
some 110,000 of them.

I like it.

In talking with longtime American Adventure cast member Lonnie,
I found out that the flag that flies on top of the pavilion has
15 stars. Do you know why?

Well, during the 1700s, the plan was that a star and a stripe
would be added for each state as it entered the union. Someone
recognized that the stripe portion of the flag would take on a
not-so-striking appearance if this continued. So the decision
came down to just add to the star field and keep the 13 stripes
representing the 13 original colonies.

Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner
while gazing at a 15-star flag.

The American Adventure also holds for me what I consider the
best live entertainment at the Walt Disney World Resort.

I'm talking about the Voices of Liberty. Of course it helps that
I'm a big a cappella fan. I could sit all day in the great
rotunda of the American Adventure pavilion and listen to the
Voices of Liberty deliver song after song, be it a patriotic,
spiritual, or Americana tune. Over the years the most amazing
aspect of the Voices of Liberty is that although personnel may
change, it seems the voices never change. The rendition of
"Shenandoah" I heard back in 1990 sounds the same in 2008, but I
know the faces have changed.

On to the attraction.

The stage itself is about the size of half a football field.
Last I checked it was about 130 feet long and 50 feet wide. The
theater holds 1024 guests and, since each show runs about 28
minutes, some 2048 guests can enjoy this attraction every hour.

The story of the American Adventure is told through the eyes of
Benjamin Franklin and Mark Twain. They take the guests on a
journey that is helped very much by an assortment of
audio-animatronic figures, film, and music.

It took five years to fully develop the American Adventure
attraction.

This attraction is said to be the first to contain
audio-animatronic figures with individual voice and speaker
systems. Think about the Hall of Presidents in Magic Kingdom and
you'll understand the difference. That attraction has a theater
system style audio approach.

The term "the Wagon" was often used when discussing the
machinery underneath the American Adventure Theater. This
175-ton, 65 x 35 x 14-foot machine is responsible for changing
the scenes throughout the show and bringing up the right set of
characters and other parts as the story of the American
Adventure is told. I can go on and on about this outstanding
piece of machinery, but if you've ever seen the attraction you
know how quietly and efficiently the scenes change. Hydraulics
play a big part as there are several hydraulic lifts, which
bring the sets into place.

The screen images are shown via a rear projection system;
otherwise the scenes with the audio-animatronic figures would
cast shadows on the screen. The screen itself is 28 feet high
and 155 feet long. The film used in the show is well over 3000
feet in length and if you're wondering, the film size is 70 mm.

Here are some interesting facts about the show:

-- The Library of Congress was contacted for permission to copy
the presidential seal used for Franklin D. Roosevelt's inaugural
speech in 1933.

-- Imagineers scanned old magazines to find the appropriate ads
used during the Depression.

-- The hair on the figures is real human hair. I understand that
each wig is woven one hair at a time at an average cost of
$13,000 apiece.

-- The furniture pieces used in the show are real antiques.

I have yet to get through the attraction's finale signature song
/film "Golden Dream" without shedding a tear. Coming from
astronaut Christa McAuliffe's state you can understand what it
feels like when I see her image on the screen.

For most of us who remember the Kennedy assassination, the
figure of JFK Jr. saluting during his father's funeral is quite
moving. This film shows so many memorable moments in American
history and it is updated from time to time. It was recently
updated and 45 seconds were added to the film, but in such a
subtle manner that it seems as if they were just "folded" into
the film.

Why is the film updated? Well, as Benjamin Franklin and Mark
Twain tell us, the American Adventure continues.

As "Golden Dream" finishes, the 12 Spirits of America statues
are somewhat showcased as the curtains behind them ascend. It's
quite a finale. These statues represent all the qualities which
make up the American spirit.

I'll leave you with this bit of trivia. When the show designers
were putting together the first plans, the thought was to have a
host or hosts for each century. Obviously, Ben Franklin and Mark
Twain made "the cut" for the first two centuries.

Any idea who was up for consideration for the 20th Century?

Two figures were considered... Will Rogers and Walter Cronkite.
However, it was decided to stick with Franklin and Twain as
co-hosts, as Rogers and Cronkite were determined to be "too
close" to serve as hosts.

This attraction remains my favorite destination when I'm in Walt
Disney World. It's the combination of the architecture, the
sounds of the Voices of Liberty, the great rotunda, the story of
the first two centuries of the American Adventure and the
stirring images and music found in "Golden Dream" that offer to
guests an experience they will never forget.

I have to visit the American Adventure on every trip. I have
some unfinished business. I have to get through "Golden Dream."

Can you?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Items we run in ALL EARS(R) HEARS are from emails
we receive from our readers, and are not necessarily confirmed
announcements from the Walt Disney Company. We run these items
merely as points of interest; they often contain speculation or
hearsay. If we are not able to confirm a piece of information we
receive from a reader by the time we go to press, we may publish
it in the ALL EARS(R) HEARS section to get feedback from others

... from Amy Hwang: My son, age 10, has allergies to dairy and
eggs. We've been taking him to Disney World since he was 3, and
every visit I discover something new that he can enjoy eating. I
recently found out about a company that makes dairy-, egg-, and
nut-free cupcakes and cookies called Divvies. Their website
indicated that Disney World carries some of their products now.
Hooray for Disney World to carry such a snack -- we plan on
looking for them on our next visit!

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

... from Amy Coronis: Just an FYI to all the engaged couples who
are looking to get married at WDW: the minimum package is
$4,000. We were hoping they offered a cheaper package since we
don't want all the bells and whistles but such a package does
not exist.

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

... from Lynn Behr: Once again Anita (AllEars.Net's Weekly
Columnist Anita Answer) has gone above and beyond with her
information about Western River Expedition! Love that girl!

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

... from Kim Meehan: On my visit to WDW, I booked my daughter
for the junior fishing excursion from the Old Key West Resort.
She had a fantastic time, and they provided the rod, reel, and
bait (cut up hot dogs). The kids also had their choice of
chocolate milk or OJ. The charge was only $10. I don't know if
it was a special because not many fish in December, or if it is
a new price, but I thought I would share. I was able to enjoy
reading the paper and eating a great breakfast while she had a
blast catching a LOT of fish. It made for a great last day for
her; we left that afternoon and it was great not to rush around
the park after packing up the room.

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

... from Team Member Linda Mac, who attended the season's first
Pirate and Princess Party: In general, it seems they have cut
back on entertainment at the party. There's only one parade, at
8:30 p.m., and there are only two castle shows, at 8 and 10:15
p.m. She also notes that the Party Guide Map no longer has times
listed. All times are provided on a one page paper times guide;
thereby making it possible to adjust shows and special
activities based on ticket sales.

Think you know Walt Disney World inside and out? This AllEars(R)
feature is designed to stump Walt Disney World enthusiasts. Put
on your thinking cap!

This week we have another "Before and After" challenge, this one
suggested by reader Valerie W. of Maryland. We give the
descriptions of two Disney-related terms (restaurant, shop,
attraction, parade, event, etc.) that have a common word in the
middle. The solution is a new, combined Disney-related term.

For example:

One of Epcot's newest thrill rides +

one of WDW's favorite roller coasters in the dark =

Mission: SPACE Mountain (Mission:SPACE + Space Mountain)

Here's this week's Before and After Challenge:

An attraction that leaves you saying, "How'd they DO that?"

+

A unique kind of "coaster" where you just might go "SPLAT!"

=

???

Think you know the answer? PLEASE, please read our rules
carefully:

1) You must be an ALL EARS(R) subscriber. 2) You must be 18
years of age or older. 3) Only ONE entry per subscriber.
Multiple entries will result in disqualification. 4) All entries
become the exclusive property of ALL EARS(R) and will not be
acknowledged or returned. 5) Only ONE winner per household. If
you've previously won a Mousy Mindboggler snowglobe, please do
not enter again. Your entry will be disqualified. 6) Void where
prohibited.

Our complete Mousy Mindboggler rules can be found at
http://allearsnet.com/ae/mbrules.htm

TO ENTER: Send your guess IN THE SUBJECT LINE of an email
message to: mmindboggler@yahoo.com

DEADLINE: Send your guesses in NO LATER THAN 11:59 p.m.

Here's the SOLUTION to last week's Before and After challenge:

An animated show that's in another dimension: Mickey's

A gem of a ride with spinning suspension: Magic Carpets of
Aladdin

Walt Disney World Bits and Bites

STEP BACK IN TIME
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Ever wonder what Walt Disney World was like way back when? Each
month we visit a time gone by in Walt Disney World history. This
month, we take a look more than 30 years back, all the way back
to January 15, 1975.

"In what was the greatest spectacular event Central Florida has
seen since the Grand Opening of Walt Disney World, Tomorrowland
was dedicated and Space Mountain officially opened in a colorful
extravaganza Wednesday afternoon. Just moments after Mickey
Mouse took a bow and said, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, we proudly
present... Space Mountain,' hundreds of red, white and blue
fireworks exploded in the sky over Tomorrowland with 50,000
balloons soaring upwards to the tune of a 2,000 piece marching
band..."

Robert Sarnoff, Chairman of the Board of RCA, and Donn Tatum,
Chairman of the Board of Walt Disney Productions, unveiled the
dedication plaque for Space Mountain. Along with the official
opening of Space Mountain was the official opening of the
Carousel of Progress and the Star Jets.

Space Mountain was the first computer-controlled thrill ride. In
addition, the side-by-side tracks had one of the first
computer-aided designs. Space Mountain actually originated in
the early 1960s when Walt Disney conceived the idea of a
high-speed thrill attraction based on the excitement of the
Space Age.

Did you know that Space Mountain is more than 180 feet high, 300
feet in diameter and took more than two years to build? RCA was
the first official sponsor of Space Mountain from 1975 until
1993, at which time Federal Express became the official sponsor.
During the 2.5-minute ride your space rocket travels up to 28
miles per hour!

Did you know Space Mountain was "flight-tested" by U.S.
astronauts and Russian cosmonauts?

HIDDEN MICKEYS ALERT
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Steve Barrett, author of the Hidden Mickeys book and webmaster
of www.HiddenMickeysGuide.com, highlights the following
Hidden Mickeys for your next journey to Walt Disney World:

1. Several folks clued me in on a classic Mickey made of rocks
at the bottom right side of the manatee tank in The Seas with
Nemo & Friends pavilion. I've waited a while, as Hidden Mickeys
made of loose rocks have a tendency to disappear over time.
Hopefully, this one will stick around! (Thanks to Marty Murray,
Gilbert, Penny Beam, Mary Newell, Matt Freeman, and Michael
Steele)
http://allears.net/btp/hm197.jpg

2. Stop by The American Adventure pavilion and listen to the
Spirit of America Fife & Drum Corps. As they march by, look for
the classic Mickeys on their drums. (Thanks to Sharon Dale and
Donna McMurrey)
http://allears.net/btp/hm196.jpg

3. Another cool rock Mickey is hidden in bushes in the Japan
pavilion. Search for an opening in the bushes along the far
right sidewalk, next to the Mitsukoshi store. These rocks have
actually changed appearance over the last few months, so I hope
the wonderful cast members keep this Mickey intact! (Thanks to
Sharon Dale, I & Y Sakurada, and Michele Moody)

MOUSEFEST 2007
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

MouseFest 2007 is now history but the memories of this
incredible week will remain with us for a long, long time.
Starting December 2, 2007, nearly 200 MouseFest cruisers boarded
the Disney Wonder for four days of great fun and relaxation.
From a walking tour of Nassau, to meeting in the Cove Cafe, to
dressing like pirates, to decorating cabin doors -- a great time
was had by all!

On Thursday, December 6, 2007, the land portion of MouseFest
officially began with 780 voluntarily registering for the
events! Most meets were maxed to capacity as over 300 folks
attended MouseFest 101, over 260 safaried in Harambe, and over
800 attended the MegaMouseMeet.

DREAM LOVERS

Susan G.: On our first full day at Walt Disney World with our
then 4-1/2-year-old daughter (her first visit), we went to the
Animal Kingdom where my husband insisted on taking the train to
the conservation station. I told him it was a major diversion
and I didn't want to embark on the train. I lost, and to my
surprise we actually saw two characters and got their
autographs. Rafiki and Jiminy Cricket both posed with our
daughter. "Not a total bust," I thought. Then we went back
outside to see a "talking trashcan." The operator of the can was
about five feet away with a microphone. He got my daughter's
attention and started asking a million questions. Everyone was
laughing so hard. The trashcan asked her if she ever saw a
talking recycling bin (we were corrected) and she told him that
at the Smithsonian in D.C. she had put her trash in a can that
said "thank you," but had never had an entire conversation with
one. It went on for about 10 minutes. Finally, after the
conversation with the recycling bin had finished, two cast
members at a refreshment stand asked for our daughter to come
over. They washed her hands with antibacterial soap and gave her
a free Mickey Ice Cream and said that she was chosen for part of
the Million Dreams Celebration. We got a lovely certificate. I'm
glad to say that if my husband had not convinced me to go on
that train ride, she never would have been picked. However, my
child's favorite memory of WDW is talking to a trash can... I
mean recycling bin.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The Litt Family: We dropped our two dogs, Belle and Jasmine, off
at the Animal Kingdom Kennel for the day. We were told that if
we came after park hours, security would let us in and check out
our dogs for us. We arrived at 8:30 p.m. and when the security
officer let us in where the animals are kept, there was a gift
bag with a Magical Moments tag on it sitting by the cage. Our
dogs were named Pet of the Day and in the gift bag was a
certificate and dog toys. What a great surprise to know even the
pets are included in the magical moments!

Amy Mitrenga: My 4.5-year-old daughter and I got on The Magic
Carpets of Aladdin ride in Adventureland. No sooner did we get
ourselves strapped into the carpet to wait for the ride to
start, do we see Jasmine waving at us. Next thing you know,
Jasmine is walking over to our carpet. Jasmine walks up to our
carpet and says to my daughter, "Hi, Princess! Can I share this
carpet ride with you?" My daughter Paige was so excited! Jasmine
got in the back seat of the carpet and the ride began. While on
the ride she asked my daughter her name and what "kingdom" we
were from. I think the cutest moment was when Jasmine asked
Paige how she got to the Magic Kingdom... camel or magic carpet
ride. Paige replied, "I came by the monorail." After the ride
concluded, Jasmine took my daughter's hand and led her over to
the photo area and introduced her as Princess Paige. It was an
AMAZING moment for my daughter! The PhotoPass photographer was
there taking pictures from the moment Jasmine walked over to the
carpet until the moment my daughter left the photo area. Truly
AMAZING!

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Andrea DeYoung: On the last day of our trip, we were getting
ready to leave the Magic Kingdom. I had stopped to look at some
items at a cart by the entrance of the train station. A cast
member walked up to us, started to ask us some questions, and
then asked if we would like to meet someone. Boy, did we ever!
She took our names down and then we went inside a building. We
stood there for a few minutes and then we were allowed to walk
behind the curtains. It was Cinderella! We had a personal
meeting with Cinderella. What a treat that was! I hadn't gotten
to meet with her since I was 4 years old. She was as beautiful
and gracious as I remembered her to be. I think that was the
best prize of them all. I was walking on air for the rest of the
day.

TIPS OF THE MONTH!

Diana Knight writes: My sister and I just returned from a
magical vacation at the World. We had the dining plan and (with
some planning) used our counter service dessert for our
breakfast the next day. (The counter service meal includes
entree, drink and dessert.) For example, we ate at the food
court in the Land. I had a sandwich and got a wonderful
blueberry muffin from the bakery as my dessert -- what a great
breakfast! Another day, we went to the bakery at the Boardwalk
for a counter service lunch and got a panini and a terrific
apple strudel as my dessert -- again, a wonderful breakfast.
With the "leftover" snack options, we were able to buy
prepackaged "goodies" to take home. This worked out great!

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

Kristen Filer says: We just returned from WDW for a wonderful
week at Saratoga Springs Resort. However, we were unable to use
all of our dining plan counter service and snack credits before
the last day arrived. We spoke with a cast member, Sandra, about
not wanting to lose them, nor wanting 10 breakfast platters. She
informed us that for a counter service credit you can do several
things. (This was breakfast time.) We used two counter service
credits for two breakfast sandwiches and two drinks, and we used
three credits for three packaged ham and cheddar sandwiches in
the refrigerator section with three desserts and three drinks.
The final five credits were used to make five continental
breakfasts -- one piece of fresh fruit, a pastry and a beverage
times five. This made the trip home easier as we didn't have to
stop for food along the way. This is a much better idea than
just letting your credits go to waste.

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

Julie reminds us: I just got back from WDW and wanted to let
everyone know the Department of Homeland Security does not allow
snowglobes through the security screening point or in the cabin
of the aircraft. This was printed on the bottom of our WDW
receipts.

Effective January 7, 2008, the Disney-MGM Studios was renamed
"Disney's Hollywood Studios." According to Disney, this change
"represents the park's growth from the golden age of movies to
the most exciting entertainment of today's movies, television,
music and theater" and more closely reflects the attractions and
experiences offered. Along with the name change, the theme park
will see additional enhancements in 2008. This includes the
debut of the interactive Toy Story Mania! and the new Block
Party Bash parade. New Disney Channel friends will be featured
at a revamped Playhouse Disney-Live on Stage.

restaurant at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa implemented
a modified age policy geared specifically toward adults and
older children ages 10 and above. While Walt Disney World Resort
caters to guests of all ages, Victoria & Albert's provides a
unique fine-dining experience. Out of the 98 full-service dining
options at the Walt Disney World Resort, Victoria & Albert's
will be the only restaurant that showcases more of an
adult-oriented atmosphere.

CareerBuilder.com today launched the search for the first-ever
Disney Parks Chief Magic Official (CMO) who will spread magic
during The Year of a Million Dreams. The search for the CMO is
part of the extended Year of a Million Dreams, during which more
than one million more dreams will be granted to guests at Disney
Parks. Beginning today, January 8, and continuing through
January 27, interested applicants can visit www.DreamCMO.com and
take the "Magic Aptitude Test" (M.A.T.) to see if they have what
it takes to be the first-ever Disney Parks Chief Magic Official.
Along with the results of the M.A.T., candidates will be asked
to show their Disney magic by submitting a 60-second video
resume online at www.DreamCMO.com. A panel of judges will select
the top 10 video resumes, which will be posted to
www.DreamCMO.com and voted on by America. The top three
vote-getters will take part in a three-day event at Walt Disney
World Resort that will test their creativity, enthusiasm,
knowledge of the Parks and magic aptitude. Throughout the
three-day event, candidates will be videotaped and the videos
will be posted on www.DreamCMO.com to be voted on by America.
The top vote-getter will be named the Disney Parks Chief Magic
Official, who beginning May 1, will help create magical
experiences for guests, participate in special events at Disney
Parks and meet Disney's real "masters of magic" -- the
Imagineers. For additional details, visit www.DreamCMO.com

As of January 1, 2008, airline passengers are no longer able to
pack loose lithium batteries in checked luggage. The new
regulation, designed to reduce the risk of lithium battery
fires, will continue to allow lithium batteries in checked
baggage if they are installed in electronic devices, or in
carry-on baggage if stored in plastic bags. Common consumer
electronics such as travel cameras, cell phones, and most laptop
computers are still allowed in carry-on and checked luggage.
However, the rule limits individuals to bringing only two
extended-life spare rechargeable lithium batteries, such as
laptop and professional audio/video/camera equipment lithium
batteries in carry-on baggage.

Many of you responded to last week's feature article regarding
giving back to cast members. Here is a sampling of your emails:

... from Anne Prianti: I got tears in MY eyes when I read Jean
and Steve Eldredge's maple syrup story. I work as a "lunch lady"
in a school cafeteria. Neither we, nor the custodians, are ever
recognized for anything! I can just imagine how wonderful that
little bottle of maple syrup made the custodian cast member
feel. On behalf of the unglamorous, invisible people everywhere
I'd like to thank the Eldredges for their thoughtfulness.

... from Christine: I was brought to tears and goosebumps this
time around reading the feature article by Jean and Steve
Eldredge and knew it was time I wrote. What an inspiration and
awesome idea to bring a little part of them to share with the
cast of WDW. It got me thinking of my family's upcoming trip
this summer. I will definitely bring something to share as well!
Thanks, Jean and Steve... and AllEars(R), too! A very Happy New
Year to you!

... from Caly: I just read Making Your Own Magic by Jean and
Steve Eldredge -- I loved it! At the end they write that they
could go on and on; please ask them to and then publish it. The
giving back is such a lovely gesture. We have had fun gifting
people with various things, but we've never gifted the cast
members -- what a lovely idea.

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

... from Janice Dion: We just returned from our first Christmas
visit to WDW (December 8-16). I had read in a previous ALL EARS
(R) that the kids' meals had declined in quality. I definitely
found this to be true especially at counter service restaurants.
The choices were VERY limited -- and the sides at every place
were bland applesauce, carrots and celery, or purple grapes. A
chocolate chip cookie and fries could be substituted. My
children are very picky eaters but even they were tired of flat,
dry, tasteless pizza, extremely bland mac and cheese, and
Smuckers PB & J Uncrustables. Choices were better at sit-down
restaurants but still limited. We had the dining plan so
everything was paid for in advance, but much food was wasted due
to lack of variety and flavor. Our best meal was a reservation
made last minute for Boatwright's at Port Orleans Riverside. The
filet mignon was out of this world!

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

... from Julie W. Ramirez: My husband and I read on your website
about the anniversary pins and since we were going to be in WDW
(December 19-29) just prior to our 25th wedding anniversary
(January 2) with the kids, we went to Guest Relations and picked
up our pins. It was a blast wearing them and getting
congratulations left and right! People had such wonderful things
to say, especially with the number of years we were celebrating.
We got a free drink at one restaurant and while eating dinner at
Cinderella's Royal Palace, we received two champagne flutes!
Everyone was so kind to us. We will have some great memories of
WDW and of this special anniversary and the two pins helped make
that happen!

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

... from AllEars(R) Team Member Linda Mac, who was roaming
around the recently renamed Disney's Hollywood Studios the other
day: The Studio Catering Company will close at the end of this
month to install fryers. All traces of the Flatbread Grill are
gone. They have replaced the kid's flatbread with mac and
cheese. I was told the sauce was made with cream cheese. The
Caesar wrap is now whole wheat instead and there's no more
quartered flatbread in the Greek salad. By the way, the dressing
is now olive and feta instead of lemon oregano. Over at the ABC
Commissary, there are no more Vegetable Noodle Stir Fry or
Tabouleh Wraps. An Asian salad has been added instead, and the
kid's stir fry has been replaced with a ham and cheese wrap with
lettuce, tomato and mayo.

The Mousy Mindboggler went green and RECYCLED a few riddles at
